This is an example of a Larger 16 Channel Portable Sound System which might be used for speech and live music with up to 16 vocals and instruments.
This example includes the following equipment:
A
pair of speakers with telescopic
stands and cables.
Speakers make or break your sound system. You need to start with a pair of decent quality professional sound reinforcement speakers. Live music is more demanding than speech, therefore you need to be even more careful with your speaker selection. You need to provide accurate sound and project it evenly throughout your room.
These speakers need to raised on tripod stands to provide "line of sight" for all the people listening and wired to your powered mixer.
An
16 channel Stereo mixer with Power Amplifier.
A good choice for a Mixer is the Allen & Heath W3-1602 is a 16 channel stereo mixer. All of the channels accept microphone or auxiliary inputs with individual volume controls for main and auxiliary 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 outputs. In addition to the 16 main channels, there are two stereo auxiliary inputs which can accept a stereo tape deck and a stereo CD player. Each channel also has its own four band equalizer, two with frequency sweep. The unit provides separate mixes for main speakers (stereo), and monitors. There are also five other mixes which could be used for other outputs such as tape recording and distribution speakers. In this manner it functions as seven mixers in one.
Each microphone channel has phantom power for condenser microphones plus a gain control, attenuation switch, low frequency roll off switch, channel ON button, peak indicator and Pre Fade Listen button for individual channel monitoring.
The W3-1602 has two internal digital effects processors. They can operate as two fully independent processors or combined as one stereo unit. This is a rare feature in a mixer, which saves hundreds of dollars in outboard equipment.
The unit is simple to operate but has the flexibility required to do professional theatre quality sound. Being a British board, it has world renowned British EQ. Studio and live sound technicians around the world prefer the British tone controls because of the way they are tapered. This controls the sound in a better way than American and other technologies.
You also need a Power Amplifier for power your main speakers.

Six
C535EB
microphones with 25
foot broadcast quality cables and high quality telescopic boom
stands.
The AKG C535 is an excellent vocal and instrument condenser microphone. It has a very smooth response with a slight rise in the 7-12KHz range to give it some presence. This microphone has a low proximity effect producing a natural sound up close or at any distance. It is therefore an excellent choice for multi-purpose applications where it might be used at various distances. The C535 is a great sounding microphone which is very versatile and forgiving. It fits nicely into both the performance and studio categories.
The CADXMXF25 is a broadcast quality, highly flexible, 25 foot microphone cable. It is double balanced to provide the highest possible electrical noise reduction.
The K&M 210/9 is a high quality, telescopic folding floor microphone stand with a telescopic boom arm. It is finished in chrome and folds to a very compact size for storage. The stand in made in Germany and is very stable and reliable.
An
FMR-500 State of the art Wireless Microphone System with HM-1 Head Microphone.
The FMR-500 is an excellent UHF wireless head or lapel system. It is a
true diversity system with removable antennae providing reliable
operation in any room. The receiver operates at a frequency away
from any radio interference and has a very tightly controlled bandwidth
making it very selective. It also has Tone-Code-Squelch, which almost totally eliminates the possibility of picking up interference when the transmitter is turned off (when it is most likely to happen).
This allows you to use up to 12 systems without cross talk. It also provides high rejection of noise. We usually sell the system with a Alectro SystemsHM-1Ultra-Light Head-worn microphone. This provides excellent sound reproduction. The system has many nice features including a removable microphone, automatic battery indicator on the transmitter and receiver, and a balanced microphone or line level output. The FMR-500 is a very advanced, automatic system. The receivers program themselves by scanning the area for unused frequency channels. They then set themselves up on available frequencies. The FMR-500 is an excellent wireless system for its low price.
Direct Interface boxes or cables are needed to connect musical instruments to a microphones jacks.

A Direct Interface Box is the best way to connect an electronic instrument to your mixer. It converts the keyboard or guitar output into a balanced microphone signal which will connect directly to a microphone input on your mixer. This usually eliminates hum, buzz and interference problems. The DI box requires a cable to connect from the instrument to the box, and another cable to connect from the box to the mic input on your snake or mixer.
The Direct Connect cable is a 25 foot cable with a mic connector on one end and a 1/4 inch phone connector with built in transformer on the other end. It plugs into a keyboard, guitar, VCR etc. and converts from the high impedance unbalanced signal out of the instrument to low impedance balanced mic level. The other end plugs into a standard microphone jack. This cable enables you to plug any instrument into any microphone jack without picking up hum and electrical interference.
A 16
Channel Microphone Snake.
You will need a microphone snake to run from the front of the room, where your microphones are, to the back, where your mixer is. The snake should have the same number of channels as your mixer has mic inputs.
You should never wire your main or monitor speakers (except powered monitors) through the snake. This can produce ultrasonic feedback which can destroy your amplifier.
Monitor Speakers with cables and power amplifier.
If you are dealing with singers and musicians, you will probably need to add monitor speakers so they can hear themselves properly. Compact Reference monitors are usually the best choice, especially for a smaller room. Learn more about Monitor Speakers.
You will also need a separate amplifier to power the monitor speakers.
All the electronics, microphones, and cables fit inside a rolling rack which you can store in a room, or load onto a truck.
